This article goes over frequently asked questions around how to remove / archive / delete class sections. For more information about class sections, check out this article.
NOTE: We strongly encourage you to not delete class sections where students sign in with word or picture passwords. If you delete a class section with these login types, students will no longer be able to access their accounts unless they created a personal login first. Read more about how students can create a personal login.
How can I archive or remove class sections I no longer use from my active class sections list?
If you have a class section that you no longer use, you can archive it to hide it from the class sections list on your homepage.
Click the three-dots icon in the upper right corner of a class section card and choose "Archive" from the dropdown menu. This will remove the class section from your main class sections list and add it to your archived class sections list.
You can also archive all active class sections at the same time. Click the three-dots menu above your class section list and choose "Archive all class sections" from the dropdown menu list.
Can I view and access my archived class sections?
Yes, you can still view and access your archived class sections. To do this, change the view of your class sections list to "Archived" using the toggle button below the "Class Sections" heading on your homepage.
I accidentally archived a class section. Can I add it back to my list again?
Yes. To do this, change the view of your class sections list to "Archived" using the toggle button below the "Class Sections" heading on your homepage. Locate the class section you want to restore, then click the three-dots icon on the right-hand side of that class section card and choose "Restore class section" from the dropdown menu to add the section back to your main sections list.
You can also restore all archived class sections at the same time. Click the three-dots menu above your class section list and choose "Restore all class sections" from the dropdown menu list. This will move all archived class sections to your active class sections list.
Can I move students out of archived class sections?
Yes, but you must first unarchive the class section. Follow the instructions above to unarchive the class section first, then move students out of the class section. Once you've finished moving the students, you can re-archive the class section.
Can my students still sign into class sections that are archived?
Yes, students will still be able to sign into a class section even if it is archived. The main goal for archiving class sections is to help reduce the list of active class sections to the ones you are currently teaching.
Why is it so hard to fully delete a class section?
We discourage deleting class sections for two reasons:
- If you use secret words or picture passwords as the login method for a class section, any student who hasn't created a personal login will no longer be able to access their account if the class section were to be deleted.
- The only way Code.org knows that a student is part of a school is if they are in a teacher's class section. If the student is no longer in a class section (because they were removed from the class section or the class section was deleted), we would need to treat the account as one that is not managed by a teacher, thereby releasing the education records to the student. By archived class sections instead, you can keep the class section out of view on your homepage while still retaining the education records for the school.
Is there a way to fully delete a class section?
You can only delete a class section if there are no students rostered for that class section. You can remove students from a class section in one of two ways:
- Find the card for the class section you want to delete. Click the three-dots menu on the right-hand side of the card and choose "Roster" from the dropdown menu.
- This will take you to the Roster page for that class section. Use the "Move Students" feature to move all students into another class section.
- After you have moved all students out of your class section, return to the homepage by clicking on "My Dashboard" in the top navigation bar on the page and locate the class section card again.
- Click the three-dots menu on the upper right-hand side of the card. If there are no students in the class section, you will see a "Delete" option in the dropdown menu list.
Note: The option to remove students or move students does not exist for class sections linked to Google Classroom, Clever, Canvas, or Schoology. If you want to remove students from these class sections, you will need to remove them from Google Classroom, Clever, Canvas, or Schoology directly and update the roster list in Code.org using the sync button on the Roster page.
