Personal Email Sections
For sections that are using Personal Email accounts, students will manage their own Code.org accounts using a personal email they have access to and their own password.
Note: This option is not recommended for students who will be using any of the SSO (single sign-on) options for logging in (i.e. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Clever, other LMS).
For more information on setting up a section using Google Classroom or Clever, check out the following articles:
For more information on setting up a section using an SSO option, not connected to Google Classroom or Clever, click here.

Before working through the steps in this article, please ensure you have a section already created for your students to join. More information here.

Step 1: Have students create new Code.org accounts
If your students do not have a Code.org account yet, they will need to create their own accounts by going to https://studio.code.org/users/sign_up. Alternatively, students can find the sign-up option by clicking the 'Sign in' button in the upper right corner of the screen, then clicking 'Create an account' on the left side of the screen:
Step 1: Have students focus only on the fields below the SSO (single sign-on) options at the top. This includes: Email, Password, and Password confirmation:
Step 2: Have students fill in their email address, their password, and then confirm their password, and then click the purple 'Sign up' button
Note: If a student attempts to sign up for an account that already exists, they will receive a message stating 'Email has already been taken' -
Note: If a student attempts to sign up with mismatching passwords, they will receive a message stating 'Password confirmation doesn't match Password'
Step 3: Once successfully entering an email address, password, and password confirmation, students will be redirected to the next screen where they will need to...
- Select their account type (Make sure your students set-up 'student' accounts, as opposed to 'teacher' accounts)
- Enter their Display Name
- Enter their Age
- Enter their State
- Enter their Gender (this is optional)
Note: Display names are what are commonly used to identify students across the website and can be changed by both teachers (on the Manage Students tab) and students (on their Account Settings page).
Step 4: Once successfully entering their information, students will be redirected to their homepage of their account.
Step 2: Have students join your section
Once your students have signed in, they can visit code.org/join and enter the six-character section code of the section you've created. Alternatively, students can scroll to the bottom of their homepage and enter the six-character section code there:
You can find your six-character section code in two places:
Your 'Classroom Sections' table on your homepage
From the top of the list of your students in your section in the 'Manage Students' tab of the Teacher Dashboard
Step 3: Ensure that students are joining your section
You can check to see if students have joined your section by going to your homepage, finding the section, and clicking the number in the 'Students' column. There, you will find all students who have joined your section.
Step 4: Get started!
Once your students have successfully signed in, they will be taken to one of two places:
- If you've assigned a course or unit to the section, students will be taken to that material once they join the section. Learn more about assigning work to your students.
- If you haven't assigned a course or unit to the section yet, students will be taken to their homepage once they join the section and they can pick an activity from there.
